Court order casts shadow on GHMC polls
A cloud of uncertainty has enveloped the GHMC polls with Wednesday’s High Court stay order. The polls are supposed to be conducted before August end with dates not clashing with the forthcoming Ganesh Chaturthi and Ramzan festivals.

With court listing the matter for third week of August and State Election Commission (SEC) stating that it would need at least 28 days to conduct elections, the likelihood of polls being held in the next couple of months is pretty remote, officials admit. Not a single municipal official is ready to say when the polls would be held even later.

GHMC Commissioner S.P. Singh in a brief interaction with presspersons on Wednesday said the government has to take a decision on the creamy layer for Backward Classes. As far as GHMC was concerned, it had followed all the rules and regulations diligently.

He pointed out that the court had not adversely commented on either delimitation of divisions or BCs enumeration.

Again the government has to decide whether it intended to approach the Supreme Court in the matter, he said and did not want to hazard any guess on when the polls might be held.
